May Day, as always, Our Day!

As opposed to the electoral bourgeois farce on 7th May, the 1st of May and any ensuing weekend has for nearly a century and a half been a time for working class celebration.  This encompassing organising, actions, catch ups with friends and comrades, community events and remembering the past with a determined optimistic look to the future.  This is particularly the case for us as anarchists.

For those who don’t know, the modern incarnation of May Day began as a day of remembrance in the 1880s.  This is the case from the start for fallen anarchist comrades and then over the years, more generally, for workers facing the wrath of the capitalist system.

For in 1887, in reaction to an explosion at an event in Chicago’s Haymarket Square the year before, attended by an enormous number of (40,000) striking workers during an increasingly mass bitter struggle for an eight-hour day, the state used the event as the pretext to sentence comrades of ours to death in cold blood.  This was despite no evidence whatsoever having proven a link to the bomb’s manufacture or consequent explosion.  The consequent killings which shook the world, took 5 of our comrades’ lives, including 4 who had the death penalty enacted upon them and 1 who committed suicide before they could be hanged.  3 more were convicted before being later pardoned.  The funeral procession of the slain was followed by thousands upon thousands of workers.  They became known as the “Haymarket Martyrs”.

“There will come a time when our silence will be more powerful than the voices you strangle today.” (August Spies – often cited as his final and bravely defiant words on the scaffold.)

There have been attempts by some political party and trade union officials in the West to muddy the reasons for celebrating May Day as International Workers’ Day.  There have been entire May Day cancellations by governments, including in Spain (particularly Barcelona) in 1937 in order to crush anarchist inspired workers resisting an onslaught upon them in street battles.  There have been hideous parades of military might in state capitalist Soviet Eastern Europe on May Day until the 1990s, which continue on to this day in Stalinist states.

In the face of all this, we continue to remember the real origins of this day and look to a time of serious potential challenges to and then emancipation from state and capital.  This, a time of resistance and joy.  A time when we can really begin to live in harmony with the planet and the incredible other species that inhabit it.  A time to end conflicts over resources.  A time for internationalism and real solidarity.  A time to gain control over our own lives.  A time when this system can finally be flushed down the toilet.  A time for history to finally begin.

Class struggle anarchists have often taken to the streets and attended events on this important day and weekend for us over the years – at both official labour movement events, where we have ducked and dived the dull stultified atmosphere and ludicrous Mao and Stalin banners, to bring our revolutionary message of emancipation for all.  And at unofficial events, where we have danced, celebrated, shared literature, marched and directly challenged those who defend the current, yet in reality, obsolete system of capital and state.

This year as a group, though small in number, following a stall at the Hull Radical Bookfair on 25th April, we will be at events in South Yorkshire (Barnsley, 2nd May) and the Northeast (Gateshead, 4th May) as well as Manchester and Salford.  We may yet be at further events too over the May Day weekend?!  We will be chatting, celebrating and trying to learn lessons from the past, whilst talking to others about our potential futures.

It is the centenary of the General Strike of 1926 in the UK.  Many leftists will be showing degrees of simplistic nostalgia over this.  For us, whilst noting some impressive local examples of determined working class unity and direct action at that time; we will point out that this event revealed the hopeless nature of official, capital friendly, trade union perspectives and of those claiming to represent us (the Labour Party and so-called Communist Party at that time but not restricted to them).  For in reality, any early enthusiasm or claims of workers potentially having any real power through this event quickly abated as its limited nature became apparent and as it failed to shake the base of the society and profit system in each we live.  We need to be honest about this but not despondent.

For our class can still challenge and potentially overcome the present system.  Be it through, for example, autonomous networked direct action, strike and community committees, popular assemblies and workers’ councils, or / and novel new bodies that display a development of genuine revolutionary content.

Emancipation and liberation are not guaranteed or in any way inevitable.  There is also much despondency currently, many recent defeats, a horrendous international conflict situation and a quietism too often displayed by our class in the social war.  However, despite all this, with the mass of resources available to humankind now and for us to thrive (moreover, as well as survive?), they need now be closer than ever.

As such, we wish to convey with hope and a determination based upon real potentials, revolutionary May Day greetings to all friends, comrades and workers throughout the world.

“I am an anarchist: I have no apology to make to a single man, woman or child, because I am an anarchist, because anarchism carries the very germ of liberty in its womb” (Lucy Parsons, anarchist organiser – on both anarchism and on our fallen comrades, murdered in 1887 by the state).

“Does this rising generation know that those who inaugurated the eight-hour day were put to death at the command of capital?”

Solidarity with Revolutionary Anarchist internationalism against the warfare-states anarcho-liberals

From a Czech comrade:

In the past, I have published an extensive analysis of how specific individuals and groups try to isolate me, attack my private life, they’re threatening my safety and sabotage the Anti-militarist activities I engage in. One of the examples given was a description of how a member of the Trhlina infoshop and the Anarchistická federace (Anarchist federation) told a friend of mine that I was at risk of a strong reaction from militant anti-fascists. In other words, the person from Trhlina and the Anarchistická federace was threatening me. At that time it was not yet clear whether the threat would come true. Now it is clear. On Saturday, February 8, 2025, I was physically attacked by one such militant anti-fascist in Prague’s Club 007.

What happened?

The attacker waited until most of my friends had left the club, followed me into the toilets, where he punched me several times in the face. No, I’m not surprised he chose such an insidious method. I’ve seen so much scheming from his cronies that I expect nothing but meanness, unscrupulousness and hypocrisy from them now.

Before “Mr. Hero” physically attacked, he also tried to “explain” to me in a few words that I should not oppose the defence of Ukraine. He did not give me any chance to express my arguments as to why I do not support the defence of Ukraine or the defence of Russia, the defence of the Czech Republic or the defence of any other state. I am an anarchist, therefore I fight against all states. Against fascist states, as well as democratic, stalinist, monarchist…

Anarchist Communist Memories of the Miners Strike [Pamphlet Review] – Kate Sharpley Review.

Miner Conflict – Major Impact : an Anarchist Communist perspective on the Miners’ Strike 1984-85 by Dreyfus

Dreyfus shows how and why the anarchists were involved. ‘This wasn’t altruism or an act of goodwill to support our mining communities. […] This was the instinctive yet enlightened self-interest of class solidarity.’[p.4]

Impressionistic in places, ‘Misty early morning picket lines took on a surreal air against the back drop of growing ghost towns’[p.18], elsewhere there’s a comic moment from heckling Kinnock at Hanley, ‘I remember one steward shouting to another “You get him!”, pointing to one of our number. After a second thinking about it, he responded “No way, YOU get him!” We were secure.’[p.30]

It’s good to have an anarchist communist view, and one from the potteries. Most importantly, this is history that means something: ‘What remains an enduring impact for me is the experience that class struggle changes people.

‘The lessons the “Left” drew were administrative and all about leadership. They pushed the lessons that the TUC can’t be trusted, that Labour Party is not a friend of our class while continuing to try and infiltrate and take over both. Political memories of that sort of thing are relatively short-lived.

European clampdown on Anarchists:

In the last year we have seen an increase in a clampdown on anarchists, anarchist propaganda and a ramping up of anti-left-wing rhetoric and laws.

This clampdown on anarchists has specifically targeted those opposed to wars globally. In Greece, France (as detailed in our article here: https://anarcomuk.uk/2023/09/14/solidarity-with-french-comrades-against-state-repression-an-international-call-for-a-week-of-action/ ) and now Italy (see below).

This coupled with recent attacks by the right wing in the UK (even in the last week ex PM [pointless minister] Liz Truss has said that her failure was not her or her cabinet but the tofu eating left wing wokerati) that the problems in the UK are caused by left wing extremists and strikes, and this follows of the footsteps of Cruella Braverman’s attack on the left time and time again.  This all comes along with various laws and proposed Acts outlawing protest, strikes and even criticism of the government.

The following was forwarded to use by our comrades in Tridna Valka (Class War):

We share on this place the solidarity call with the comrades from the anarchist fortnightly Bezmotivny, who are facing a trial in Italy for their antimilitarist activities (especially against the war in Ukraine).

In recent weeks, the four comrades under restrictive house arrest since Aug. 8 for Operation Scripta Scelera were notified of the decree setting the immediate trial and consequently the start of the trial at the Massa court, before the monocratic judge, next Jan. 9, 2024. A total of ten anarchists are involved in the investigation: in addition to the four under house arrest, there are five comrades under the obligation to stay overnight (one among them currently also under the obligation to sign) and one comrade under investigation at large.

For all of them, Federico Manotti, prosecutor of the Genoa Public Prosecutor’s Office, had requested arrest in prison for subversive association for the purpose of terrorism, incitement to commit a crime with the aggravating factor of the purpose of terrorism, clandestine printing, as well as only for some also offending the honor and prestige of the president of the republic — offenses allegedly consumed with the editing and distribution of the internationalist anarchist fortnightly “Bezmotivny.” The request for immediate trial concerns only the charges of aggravated incitement to commit a crime and insulting the honor and prestige of the president of the republic.

Recall that the immediate trial is a special procedure characterized by the absence of the preliminary hearing: in fact, it goes from the preliminary investigation to the trial hearing. This procedure is actionable only in the event that the prosecutor and the investigating judge, who must validate the request, believe they have overwhelming evidence of the suspect’s guilt and that he or she is in a state of detention (in prison or under house arrest).

In the recent past, the Rome prosecutor’s office had the tracotence to proceed with this formula in the context of Operation Bialystok, but this did not bring great luck to the inquisitors. Lately, the trial of comrade Marco Marino, known as Zac, has also been taking place under immediate trial.

However, this is the first time, as far as we can remember, that in the context of an anti-anarchist investigation the immediate trial is being triggered for only part of the suspects, breaking the investigation into several strands. This is an obvious attempt to sap solidarity and, above all, to quickly dismiss a part of the proceedings with a precedent that can be used in the future to plug the anarchist press.

Overall, the operation seems rather bungled. The hearing for the immediate trial has been set while the cassation hearing on precautionary measures (which will also concern the associative charge) has not yet taken place, with an unusual destination (the monocratic judge of a peripheral court) that could be declared incompatible during the course of the trial.

On the other hand, some of those indicted for editing the anarchist fortnightly will presumably be tried only later, as they will not be able to intervene at the time when issues that undoubtedly concern them (above all, the theoretical profile of the newspaper) will be discussed, ending up on trial with a previous sentence already handed down on the subject. Therefore, on this occasion too, the Genoa Investigative Judge chose to align himself with the prosecutor’s demands.

The story of “Bezmotivny” is a story of solidarity, of internationalism, of class struggle. The story of a newspaper that has never shied away from supporting imprisoned anarchists around the world and publishing claims. It spent itself in the solidarity movement with Alfredo Cospito, who, moreover, ended up in 41 bis regime also following a proceeding for incitement to commit crimes with the aggravating factor of the purpose of terrorism, the Sibilla operation (mainly inherent to “Vetriolo“).

Three comrades investigated in Scripta Scelera were also involved in Sibilla, and the Genoese prosecutor’s operation partially unfolded along the lines of the previous proceeding, so Scripta Scelera is aimed at consolidating as a repressive practice the precautionary measures with reference to the charges of aggravated incitement to commit crimes concerning revolutionary publications.

“Bezmotivny” has taken an uncompromising internationalist position against the war in Ukraine: against every state, starting with our own, for revolutionary defeatism, for the defeat of NATO. This repressive operation is an expression of the war policies of the Italian state.

That history is also our history. The technical acrobatics of an author-seeking magistrate will not be enough to make a course like this be judged and dismissed out of hand.

AGAINST CENSORSHIP, WE PERSEVERE IN AGITATION AND ANARCHIST PROPAGANDA!

We in the AnarCom Network stand in solidarity with our comrades across Europe and the rest of the world who stand against war mongering and authoritarianism!
